i tried larger turks heads, but the larger diameter spokes made them look not right. I think, for my spokes, what I did was the best solution - obviously, since that is what I did. i think larger diameter line would have only caused the underside of the turk, had I surrounded the spoke, to become more "bunched" up and thus unsightly.

Higgs , What you did looks great and well

portioned. My wheel is flat bronze with wooden spokes so I have Just marked the top center post with a turks head. We can get carried away with fancy work.

That is what I thought

I spent a lot of time time to do a 5 strand or larger turks head that would cover the stainless rim and work its way around the spoke, but I was not able to get something i liked so I went the opposing turks. The rope work really adds a nautical look to an older yacht like yours and mine. Like you, I get a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment out of the work I do on my boat. Boats shold not only function, but they should be eye candy, as well.

Who knows? Maybe it will catch on

and we will see a return to some fine marline spike seamanship.

Dream on

The old skills are no longer needed. Want an eye splice - just order the line from West marine. Need a thimble spliced in - if you even know what a thimble is, West will do it for $15 or so. How many sailors can whip a line's end or even care how to do it. Heat shrink tubing and duct tape has made that skill obsolete.
