I have a leather cover (elk hide) on my wheel and I wouldn't be without it. Friends, who's wheels are not covered, constantly comment on how great it feels, tho they are too cheap to get the kit for themselves, so whenever I sail on thier boats, I miss the feel of the leather, even in summer. Go with leather, you won't regret it.

With a little time and patience you can hitch

3 ply laid nylon line over the wheel and tie turks heads at each spoke with a unique one at thw king spoke. The line will cost about 10 bucks. Edit to add. http://www.sterlingnets.com/twine.html If you don't like white then Rit brand dye will allow you any color you want.

Ross...

you have way too much time on your hands. What does the steering wheel look like in your car?!?! Waiting for the photo. Jack... just take some cordage of your choice and knots... and wrap it around top dead center on your destroyer wheel.... about 6 or 8 inches will do. You will always know the position of your rudder. Happy wrapping

Raymond, cars are always left strictly stock.

But I have opened some 3/4 inch polypropylene rope and wraped that around the lifelines, wormed and parceled and in the process of serving it. Grabbing a lifeline as thick as a hoe handle give me a feeling of security. It doesn't cut into my hand and is never cold or hot to the touch.
