Omygawd Higgs, I may be the last man with

a dittybag that has a palm and needles and twine and a seam rubber and a real marline spike and beeswax and a fid. I have to dump it out to find what I want much of the time. ;D

wow Higgs

I too have a ditty bag of marlinspike things. Wouldn't be without it! Shrink Wrap on the end of a line? I think not. I whip mine and they look great. Why break something if it don't need fixin? Its' been around for well over 10 years, well over ten I say! What do you use on a sail tear, duct tape?

Fancy work

I'm getting started on fancy work - I think it adds to the boat. I've been doing eye splices etc. for a while. Instead of whipping ends, I'm now using the double braid back splice - gives a cleaner look imho. Anyway, I have the Brion Toss knot book which has a very small section on fancy work. Does anyone have suggestions about books or webb sites which would better cover fancy work, admirals lace etc.???

Jerry --- "Marlinspike Sailor" ...

used to be 'the' book for entry into 'fancy'. Lots of Grafting (overhand and underhand), various forms of ringbolt, coachwhipping, sword-mats, etc. plus good directions on the most the prime 'fancy' knots such as the Matthew Walker, etc. This is an old book so it may be out of print and hard to find.

Thank you for your reply. I have seen advertisements for the ColorWheelz in my sailing magazines. Have you actually used this product yourself? If so, have you been pleased?

Knot Work

I had to make my ditty bag from sail cloth AND a grommet on a sail to pass for Able in the Sea Scouts way back in the 70's. Our 40' ketch (SES Malolo) had canvas sails. I was very familiar with a palmer and wax. When I was doing Medieval re-creation (SCA) I introduced splicing on the pole lines we all used on our pavilions. Splicing happened on land as much as at sea in the 1400's, but nobody else in the group had a sailing background to see the possibilities. Thanks Ross and Higgs. I hadn't thought about fancy knot work in 30 years. I now plan on it for my modern mass production boat. It'll go nicely with the signal flags I fly, which are also obsolete.

Dave I was reading novel recently about

a family on the Eastern shore of The Chesapeake Bay. The family had a flag pole with a yardarm from which they flew signal flags for family members when they wanted them to return to the dock. They can still be a good way to make simple communication. Just be sure you fly the proper signals. ;)

I use the 1939 code book. ( out of print :-D ) My signals are always correct!

My Choice

We are very happy the leather covering on our Catalina 34 wheel. I think it has a better feel. Good luck!

What did I say to make you ask if I used duct tape on a sail repair? I was, I thought, being quite supportive of the "old ways" here. I, too, whip my lines - the practice has been around for several hundred years, which is more than 10.

sorry Higgs

I must have mis-interpreted the info you had posted.
