Have any of you installed one of those leather steering wheel kits by edson that come with cover, waxed thread & needles? Any suggestions or "tricks". I remember trying to install similar covers on my car wheel years ago and it was a pain and never looked good. Bob F.

Wheel cover

I bought the foam padded one from H.O.W. and did it over the weekend while at Catalina. Fairly easy to do with a lot of repeditive stitching.

Bob Yes, we did. It's boring, tedious, repetitive, and boring. But very worthwhile. Don't need to wear gloves to hold the cold wheel during the summer anymore! Stu

center the seam

make sure you center the seam with straight on your rudder,,,,,really helps. other than that yep lots of stitching keep and the seams tight. I bought mine a West Marine

Same here ! ! !

Got mine at West Marine too. Very tedious process but let me tell you am I ever glad in the cold weather that I am not holding onto a metal wheel. Follow the instructions carefully. Good luck, it is worth it. JS

I bought the their kit that included closed-cell foam under the leather. Very nice soft feel especially because of the foam. I wouldn't install leather on a wheel without the foam, the slightly extra thickness really feels good. The instructions were very complete about how to do it including the stitch, and the kit included everything you'd need including double-sided tape, needles, thread. Wearing an old pair of sailing gloves while stitching will help to get the seams very tight while protecting your hands. I talked with the owner of Boatleather.com at a boatshow, and he does offer boat show specials.

Wheel Cover

We took the wheel home and suspended it between two chairs using a broomstick through the hub. Made it easy to rotate while stitching. Still a tedious job, but at least you can spread the job out over a couple of nights and in the comfort of your home.
