If it were a car I'd call it a trunk. Is it the lazarette? I would like to know the name of the aft storage area on my Mac 26S, with a hinged lid that opens up an aft. This compartment is right at the stern, under the tiller, and holds a bunch of important stuff, including gas. It runs across the stern, although, with the motor access well (or whatever THAT is called) on the port side, the lid is only on the starboard side and the storage compartment runs low on that port side, under that well. What is it called on a boat? I have read some things referring to the lazarette and seeming to be talking about an aft storage area, but other article call something else (forward) the lazarette. Thank you kindly for contributing to educating a sailor-in-training. Cheers. -r

Yes....

...I call it a lazarette. However, in Australia, our cars have boots, not trunks so maybe it's called something else over there. Bing

Aye be gar matey!

Downunder or way up here in Canada, it is indeed called a Lazerette locker. The top being a Lazarette deck, especially if it spans the whole aft width of the boat. A boot on the other hand (or foot for that matter) is something we wear on our feet to keep them dry or warm (or both). The trunk on the other hand (or foot for that matter) is neither worn on the hand nor foot, but is the rear storage on a car, or on a boat it houses the centerboard, ie the centerboard trunk. A locker at the forward end of the boat is typically called an anchor locker.

Wondering about the pronunciation

Wondering about the pronunciation I looked “lazarette” up in the Merrian-Webster Online Dictionary. I found it interesting that the first two variations both refer to either contagious disease or quarantining. Just thought it odd is all. Bob N Miss Lisa

A little more confusion....

First, Eco, yes, it's called a lazarette (pronounced LAZZ A RETT, rhymes with 'cigarette') aka the 'junk box'! And, just for giggles, on English cars, the 'trunk' is called the 'boot' , the 'rag top' is called the 'hood', the piece covering the engine (what us Yanks call the hood) is called the 'bonnet'and a wrench is called a 'spanner'. Amazing what you can learn from owning an Austin Healy! On a Mac 26, next time you're down in the lazarette, check the hoses running from the cockpit drain and motor well drain, as they may well need to be replaced. The drain hoses on my 26D were pretty well shot and I replaced them to prevent any problems. For such a relatively small boat, the laz on the Mac 26 is pretty big, you can actually crawl down inside it and still have room to move around. I've added carpet to the floor of mine and a light w/switch on the lid to make it easier to see what's in there at night. Anyhow, happy sails! Jeff
