I have noticed my boat leaning to the starboard side. I took everything out of the boat and it is still leaning. Any advice as to what it could be? also, the topside of the bow has some soft spots in it, is there a way to reinforce this and what should I use? thanks for any help

Could it be that your starboard deck is full of water? If the deck is springy, it's possible. Drill holes in the springy area, and check for moisture. If the drill bit throws out a soggy mess, that's most likely the problem. There are several ways to fix this, some more involved than others.Google "deck repair". Larry Wilson

Deck repair

For $21.95, visit your local Barnes & Noble or Amazon and buy "Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair", by Don Casey, published by The International Marine Sailboat Library, a division of International Marine/McGraw-Hill. It is a terrific resource for identifying and fixing such problems. Good luck!

Everything is dry. nothing mushy or wet...thats coming up. I'm going to have it hauled out in a few months, we'll see when it dries out for a few weeks or so. Thank you for the responses and I will check out that book also. Take care all!! Dan Blake

A Tip

The usual procedure for repiaring the damage from moisture in the deck is to drill. lift out part of the top layer, clean out the damaged balsa, fill and reset. You will endup with markings where the drilling and cutting was done. Ericson is unusual in having a vynl top in the cabin. Have your fiberglass man take down the top at the affected area and do the work from below. Then put the top back in place. No exterior scars or cut marks. And less labor. On tilting to starboard check where you fuel and water tanks are. If both on starboard side and are full or near full, that may be the cause.

leaning..

I was told it would take about 100 pounds to get it to lean like it is (2-3 inches). Thats a lot of weight!!! I'm going to see if there are any fluids in any tanks I didnt know about. I just bought the boat about 1 and a half months ago so I am still finding things while searching. There was a stereo cabinet and speakers added to the starboard side (unless they were stock) that could be throwing it off a bit... We'll see when I start digging. Thanks again for all your input!! much appreciated. Dan Blake Rum Runner E30 1969 Richmond, CA

100 lbs = 12 gal /-

If your starboard tanks are full and there is no counterweight to port, you are going to list. Don't worry about it. Just get the boat up to the standards you want in mechanics and cosmetics.

Thank you very much. I really need to go through this boat and find all the tanks. I know of one in the front V berth but thats all I have seen so far. Dan

I went through the whole boat, took out everything the original owner had in her and ended up taking out... 234 pounds of junk!!! most of it was rope and extra parts that were rusted out or just plain useless. I used 6 trips in a dock dolly .... funny how most of it was taken and used by people on the dock once I threw it away. One mans trash is another mans treasure. Thank you for the information. Dan

Normal condition

Leaning (healing) to port is normal when on starbard tac. Try letting out a little sheet and moving the crew to windward. If the condition persists shorten sail.
