my boat leans to the port side and the water from my tanks drain from the starbord side to the port side and makes the boat lean more. The previous owner added a water heater, compressor for refrig and an extra battery. Can this make the boat lean or can there be an area on the boat which has water stored and makes the boat lean?

It really doesn't take much to make your

boat list. Each winter when I am draining one of my water tanks I stand out board of the life lines and hang on the port side shrouds the heel the boat enough to completely drain the cockpit water tank. I weigh 160 pounds. Place a valve between the port side tanks and the starboard side tanks so that they can't exchange water. and otherwise balance your boat.

Listing to port...(or any side for that matter)

..is strictly a matter of too much weight on one side compared to the other. You need to do an evaluation of the amount of excess weight you are carrying and where it is placed. We have an old rule on our boat. At the dock make two piles, gear you need and gear you don't. Take all the gear you don't home to the garage. The remaining pile gets cut in half. One of those goes on-board the rest goes home. Sail with tanks nearly empty instead of always full. At roughly 8 pounds per gallon that extra water and fuel is quiet a load. At 3/4 of a gallon consumption, 5 gallons will get you more than 6 1/2 hours of motoring. Ask yourself when was the last time you spent 6 1/2 hours motoring?

LIST

Several ways to combat this list. First, and preferred is to eliminate some weight, and re distribute the rest. Sometimes this is easier said than done. I have a friend with a H36. He has added so much stuff, that had a list to the port side, and didn't want to get rid of this stuff, so he added a few hundred pounds of lead shot to the starboard side. This worked as far as the list goes, but the boat squats some in the stern, and seems to pound more than it should in head seas. Since he is primarily a day sailor, and ventures offshore almost never, and never for more than a day, he seems to be willing to live with it. Lots of ways to deal with it, just what ever works best for you.

list

I had an older Oday 30 that developed a list after a bottom job that included blister repair. It seems that one side had more repair than the other and believe it or not the one side had "soaked" water internally into the hull and caused the list. ( this later caused a delamination in the hull) The boatyard at the time just added lead onto the other side and straightened it out. About 8 years later when I had the boat out for another big blister repair it took 5 or 6 months for the hull to really dry out. This is a long story and I am not going into it but it was a $10,000 ordeal and ended up with a really nice new bottom. Terry
