Chuck,
What is the make and model of Lealea's compass? I have
scanned some catalogs for a compass that reads from both sides of the
bulkhead but to no avail. thanks

Hi Craig

The Plastimo Contest 101 reads from both sides but you have to add
180* to the reading when viewing from the cabin. It also has an
indicator of the healing angle on the cockpit side and 12v
internal illumination. Currently being sold mail order in the UK for
around £80+P&P.

I replaced the original (?) Silva that had become magnetised with one
last month. You need to be careful cutting the hole to avoid cutting
away the part of the bulkhead that has to be drilled for the nylon
retaining screws. Plastimo supply a self-adhesive guide which helps.
There are also two versions - \'A\' for northern hemisphere and \'B\' for
southern.

They also sell a compensator that fits into a slot at the bottom of
the compass as an extra. I found it didn\'t need any adjustment once it
was in place so have saved the extra cost.

Dear Chris,,

We just came back from a trip with our Vega around the IJsselmeer, the large innerlake of the Netherlands.

In our yachting harbour in Naarden I noted a Vega for sale for € 6700.00 She is not in a good shape, and advertised for approx half the price you saw in E bay for an American Vega.

I don’t think people here will be rushing to purchase her.

Happy sailing,

Henk Jansen’

Dear friends,

Since year I have installed two compasses, to allow me to see from both
sides of the bulkhead.

I see the question has already been answered - its a Plastimo Contest
101 - we have two on either side of the companionway. I chose them
because they fit the existing holes when I replaced the originals but
I am pleased with the overall performance. To read your course from
inside the cabin you must add or subtract 180 from the reading. We
found it almost automatic after a very short time

If I were more on the ball I could give you a direct link to the
compass from the AVA web site where you could purchase them from West
Marine and the Association would get a commission from their
associates program.

As it is, I can only direct you to scroll down to the the West Marine
Navigation link at the bottom of the page at:

From there you can find the compass easily enough.

Of course, as it has been pointed out, you can probably find the same
item for a little less $ elsewhere.

Aloha kakou,

Chuck

Nice of the owner to show the pics of her on the hard. It illustrates a very
bad thing. You can see that the blocks under the keel are forward and aft by
the rudder. Vegas need a block in the middle also! The ballast is forward in
the keel and there is a large void in the aft section. the weight of the
boat can cause the keel to buckle by the rudder shoe. We found out the hard
way. The yard in Mexico where we hauled moved the boat while we were away.
Damage did occur that took several days to repair.
