We recently purchased a Catalina 30, 1985. In steady rain we get leaking at the bulkhead in the area directly under the mast. There was lots of silcone caulking at the base of the mast. It was suggested we remove this as it could be plugging the weep holes. (What weep holes?) We have done this. No change. Running water on the deck doesn't cause leaking, only rain. We really don't want to remove the mast. Any ideas?

Remove mast

On our boat(87' 30) the mast wiring passes thru the center of the mast step. This would be the first place I 'd look. If water is entering through that location it could be leaking around the compression post and then out onto your bulkhead. If that the case it could be leaking into your deck surrounding the mast step, not good. If you've caught it early enough, no harm done. If you let it go unchecked It will be more than the cost of just pulling the mast....Silicone around the outside of the mast step won't help since the water is coming in through the top of the mast :( Good Luck!

Leak at mask

I agreed with Richard. I've had the same problem on my '86 Catalina 27. I removed the plates on both sides of the mast, just above the deck and put silicon around the mast wires where they go through the deck. Long screw on nozzles are available for the smaller tubes of caulk. This is one area where neatness doesn't really count. Good Luck.

Mast leak

I have the same problem with my 86 C30. I am going to try the spray foam the you use for filling windows and doors gaps. Since it expands it should take much and it has a long straw are appling. I had to drill the weep holes in my mast. These are just small holes in the base of the to let the water drain out.
