As I move through the 20 or so spring "projects", near the top of the list is finding and correcting leaks on my '82 O30. I believe that water is making its way in at the mast and am preparing to cut off the existing boot for a better inspection. Since the existing boot has been wrapped with some type of cloth tape, I'm unsure of what I'm getting myself into. I've seen a replacement offered by Rig-rite, but based on Don Casey's great instructions, think that fabricating a new boot with an inner tube with canvas cover and hose clamps should work just as well. I was just wondering if anyone had done this repair as Casey recommends replacing when the mast is stepped to kept a continuous rubber gasket around the mast. Since I've no plans on pulling the mast this year, I was planning on cutting the inner tube, placing it around the mast and then resealing with polysulfide or comprable rubber cement. Anyone have any other ideas? One other concern I have is that in Caseys illustration--the area where the collar is i.e. the point where the mast passes through the deck--there appears to be a flange that would provide a good seal with the recommended hose clamp set up. I'm not sure the same "lip" exists on the O'Day set up. Thoughts, comments, or recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe

thats the downside of keel stepped masts

I pretty much have the mast leak down to just a few drips with rubber tape. I also used some silicone in the wire channels (isomat mast) Leaks.. still working on them. found a big one on the portside port and the lexan windows leaked like they weren't even there! also the starboard stancion that's over the navcom area leaked allot. good luck!

I guess old boats leak!

Thanks. I'm thinking I've got a big one at the mast, but it could also be coming from the hatch. Guess I need to get out the silcone and go to work. BTW do you know the diameter of the lexan deadlights on the bow deck. I put my knee through one and need to replace. A guy on the yahoo O'day group replaced with a brass and glass deadlight and said it worked great but it's pretty expensive.

my 28 had leaky mast collar for the past 2 seasons. My old (original) neoprene mast boot was shot. About a month ago I purchased MastBoot tape (windblown products) http://www.apsltd.com/Tree/d276000/e274249.asp self adhearing, watertight, easy to install.......
