After all out CA storms I found that my cushions in the aft cabin were soaked. It seems as if the water came from the base of the wheel housing or some where in that area. The cushion was soaked near the wall that separates the lazzaret. There was no water in the lazzaret and there was enough water to make it to the bilge. So now I have to flush the inner bilges to prevent the odor problem. I was going to seal the base of the wheel housing. Does anyone have any suggestions where to start looking? Or has anyone had this problem.

me too

We just bought a 31 in the fall. There is significant evidence or leaking in the same areas you report though the boat was dry upon survey and delivery. The wheel base seems like the only place it could be coming from. We pulled the cover above the berth and could see no sure signs of leakage but are pulling the wheel and rebedding since we have the boat indoors for some repairs and upgrades anyway. Here is a partial list of the other work we are doing in case you have any questions or advice. compression post inspection/replacment new side windows new sliding hatch new life lines new roller furling...harkin? Have not decided yet on which brand. misc minor gelcoat repairs new bumpers on cokpit seats & adding latches autopilot perhaps but the review of the 4000+ wheel pilot is weak and a below decks unit is expensive new battery charger new raw water pump new packing gland new seacocks misc interior cosmetic repairs new sanitation hoses bottom job. full strip if we get that far etc etc etc :)

I had a leak in the cock pit

I had a leak around the base of the stainless hand hold attached to the steering pedastal. I removed the bolts and rebeded the bases. I had to remove the cover for the steering quadrant in the overhead of the stern berth to get at the bolts.

Stinky Bilges

I make up a mix of pinsol and small amount of bleach and hot water. At least a gallon and flood the engine bilge. This flows down to the main bilge and then what does not pump out I suck out with a shop vac with a small platic hose attached (with duc tape)to the regular hose. If I can I'll take the boat out for a sail to slosh the mixture around. There has been much written about this subject in the archives.

What about the cockpit drain?

The pedestal is raised off the cockpit sole. While there is a chance that there my be a leak in one of the bolts that secures the pedestal to the sole I would look at some other sources too. You may want to check the cockpit drains. I would get a stopper and plug them up. Get a hose and add a couple of inches of water to the cockpit. Do NOT fill it up as high as the pedestal mount. There is a good chance that it is the drain. Be sure to check the starboard side too. It could be the fitting and/or the hose. It may be as simple as recaulking. If you think it really is the pedestal, just remove the cover for the steering. Mark, which model do you have?

Ceck your scupper hose ...

I had a similar problem ... after a rain storm my bilge had water (normally bone dry)! Turned out that the scupper hose clamp let go and the hose disconnected .... hence all the rain water going into the cockpit ended up in the bilge! Easy fix ... hope this helps!

leaking cockpit

I have a port window for my aft berth, and it gives me a view of the cockpit from inside, I had a leak thru the window, and during replacing the window I discovered that the factory installed window didn't have enough sealant to cover a small hole for the window, and when my scupper stopped up from a deluge the water rose enough to enter at this point. I have since removed one of the strainers to one of the scuppers to keep it open.

Thanks Rod

When and if you have time, email me or reply here and tell me how you get into the compression post, step by step. Do you have symptons. I do not, just some strange noise. I have a 1983 Hunter 31. S/V Drum. my email address is: jimmcclung9941@yahoo.com I like this boat and have had her is some rough seas. She always responds. Thanks, Jim McClung.

Other leak sources

Below the quadrant is just the only place the water can exit. The water is running from the actual leak site, and going under your cockpit floor. The below decks binnacle area is the nearest spot in the inner liner that the water can escape from. The actual source of the leak could be in.... 1) Inside the port side rope locker lazarette 2) Binnacle or binnacle rail fittings 3) Port side scupper (upper) 4) aft lazarette 5) engine gage panel 6) Damaged cockpit floor 7) cockpit window 8) aft stanchion fittings 9) Anywhere else, likely on the port side inside of the combing. Be sure to look in side the lazarettes, because heavy rains or hosing down can cause the lazarette hatch drainage canals to be overworked and fail. You might also now have rot in the cockpit floor (I hope not).

Helm Leak

One of the few leaks I was able to correct was water entering around the compass the going inside the steering eventually reaching the aft cabin
