Leaks -- again

Just put the 23 on the water this spring and have found and fixed most of the leaks. However, I have found two more. Both are on the cabin top. The first is around the radio antenna pass-through. Viewed from the inside of the cabin, there is a second wire which I assume is the mast ground located about 2" from the pass-through. The antenna pass-through is a piece of cake to seal but I can't find where the ground wire exits the cabin. At this point I can only assume that it is attached to the Kenyon mast base. Does anyone know how the ground wire is attached?The second leak is coming from the forward port corner of the companionway hatch. During a heavy rain there is a leak which falls on the port cushion just aft of the V berth. As I just installed new covers two days ago (Bob at USYC did a great job!!) I'd like to fix this before I ruin the cushion. I assume that the amount of rain was too much for the hatch gutters to handle. My fix would be to mount a canvas cover over this area which could take into account the whole area. A 4' x 7' cover would protect the whole companionway area including the hatch boards. The added bonus would be protecting the bright work from the sun. Does anyone have any other solutions?JerryS/V Shapieron

We really need a solution to this

Exact same last remaining leak for me. My theory is that it is on the port side because that side holds the battery and motor, and we definitely have a slight but noticeable list to port. This year I am covering the area with a cheap tarp hung over the boom. It's working, also helps the brightwork and also in keeping the cockpit clean, but looks lousy.C'mon H23 savants - has anybody solved this?

The Mast ground

is attached to the through bolt on the mast base, one of them is over sized to accept the connector and an extra nut and washer.I find water gathered in the aft keel bolt area under the sole whenever we have heavy rain, and some drops on the sourounding area. It is coming in from the sliding hatch, as you surmised, when the gutters are overloaded. I live with it and mop up before sailing as it helps to keep the entire area clean and shiny!!

Since I'm still new to the

H23, I'm still learning. I think the solution is to cover the area because no matter what is done, the gutters can handle only so much water before overflowing. The point would be to redirect the water before it gets to the gutter. My last boat (Starwind 22) had snaps around the companionway which I assume were for a cover. If and when I fabricate a cover I think I'll use bungee cords.Thanks Mike and Chris for your input.

Mooring ball vs. slip...

Same issue here with the ability of the gutters to handle a downpour. They don't do a great job of it. Our H23 is on a mooring ball and therefore free to swing towards weather. That does help a great deal as rain isn't blown back towards the seam between the sliding hatch and the lifting hatch. When I'm on the hard for winter and early spring I have a lot more water coming in as she can't swing. I'd image those of you on slips would see that too. Now, when I'm on the hard I use a small blue tarp, not sure of the exact dimensions but it is hardly large enough to cover the hatch and companionway, secured to the stantions and the horn cleats in the cockpit with bungie cords to keep out water.

I don't have alot of experience with the H23 yet, but the P.O. told me he had no trouble with leaks and the boat stayed pretty dry inside. What I think might've helped is that he kept it on a mooring and it was always point into the wind. I have it in a slip and have yet to have a good rain, although I did hose the boat down pretty good, without seeing any water intrusion. While I was washing, I flushed the gutters alongside the sliding hatch. I noticed alot of debris washed out and I was thinking if enough crud built up in there it might cause the gutters to back up and overflow inside.
