A recently purchased, very-old, Blue Jay has a self-bailer that leaks when closed. On inspection, it appears that when originally installed there was a gasket that sealed the opening, but with use over many years, it appears that part of the gasket is missing. Does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with this problem short of removing the entire unit from the boat and cutting a new gasket? I would prefer to avoid the removal out of concern that taking it out may damage the gel-coat. Thanks for any recommendations.

Try 3m 4200

Try loosening the screws and squeeze 4200 inside on top of the gasket. I dont8rzmk know if this will work but you have nothing to loose by trying it Bob Fox 1975 P26W #76 Whitecap Marblehead MA

thanks Bob, I was thinking of maybe something along those lines. If it only held up reasonably well for the season, or part of the season, that might do the trick.

Could you fabricate a replacement gasket

from some inner tube rubber? Maybe in conjunction with the 4200 already suggested. Just had a swim in the Sound off Lloyd Neck. Ahh!
