Seeking advice on what size packing to use. I have 1/8 inch size that the previous owner of the boat gave to me but not sure if this is the correct size i need. How do you replace the packing after the correct size is determined, Would like to do it myself and not hire expensive mechanics. Any advice? Thanks

If you haven't done it before...

I suggest you have the boat hauled. Try just tightening it first.

Not hard just a little wet

Do a search of the information on this site and you will find a description on how to replace the packing. I believe you have a 1" shaft and the packing is 7/16" but please check that with another source. If you are replacing the packing with the boat in the water, you can stop most if not all the water coming in the boat by diving and plugging the shaft exit. Take a thin cloth and a small flat head screwdriver and stuff the cloth around the space where the shaft exits the boat. The outside water pressure will hold the cloth in and stop the flow of water when you take the stuffing box apart.
