it seems my mast is leaking during heavy rains. no water in the cabin but is seems to drain into the bilge. would this be coming from the top of the mast down inside or at the deck? it's a '78 c-30.

How do you know

How do you know the water in the bilge is coming from the mast? I have a '77 C30. It may be possible that your mast has a ground wire that runs from a keel bolt to the mast step as my boat does. If the seal around that copper wire is bad it's possible water may be getting in thru there. You would have to take the mast down to repair. However, from time to time my boat will get "myetery " water in the bilge after a rain.

I'm not positive

it's coming from the mast but i can't find anywhere else it would be coming from. everything on the boat is dry and water marks anywhere. i'm going to run a hose at the mast/deck connection to see if it is coming in there.

Is you mast stepped on the keel (passes through the deck), or on the deck? If it is keel stepped it will allow water to enter during heavy rains. The halyards wick water into the mast, and rain enters through the openings at the masthead.

I'm trying to track what seems to be a similar issue, and have been systematically eliminating other possibilities. The deck stepped mast design shouldn't, in my view, permit water to enter below the deck. Perhaps someone who has had their mast down can offer some details on that joint construction??
