My 1991 Hunter 30T is leaking water at the rate of approx. 2 gal./hr. The leak isn't coming from any of the through hulls, prop shaft or rudder post which leaves the keel as the probable culprit. The water isn't coming in around the keel bolts but rather through the hole between the middle and aft bilge compartments that allows water to flow from one to the other. I have been told that this is not an unusual problem with Hunter boats built at that time because the bedding material used when attaching the keel breaks down and becomes brittle. Has anyone experienced this problem and how did you solve it. I have been told that the way to fix this is to drop the keel and re-bed. I have received an estimate of over $3,000 to make this repair so I am asking if there is a less expensive way to go. By the way,I've had the boat since it was new and it's a fresh water boat that has never had any hard groundings.
