I am experiencing a small leak in the seal (motor to cutter blade/impeller) of my original Jabsco head and am considering replacing the head with a new fresh water Raritan head. I have read that fresh water heads (fresh water taken from the water tanks) reduce the odor of the head because obviously it eliminates the sea water component. Raritan says the replacement should be easy but just to be certain the I can get 3.5 gpm at 10 psi from the water system into the new head.

Has anyone made the change to the Raritan Eloquence (nice name for the function of this device) using fresh water instead of sea water and could you tell me your satisfaction level? Of course the other option is to simply replace the seal or, since the motor/impeller is old replace the rotating unit of the head and keep on going. I think the Raritan will be an upgrade.

leakin head

I've always been scared to pump from the fresh water to head for possibility of back flow and sewage getting into fresh water supply just a little bit of bacteria could cause big problems

good point. They say they have a check valve with solenoid to preven that but I know cross linking fresh water and sewage at our homes is a no-no. good point and you might have saved me some money! Sandy

The Head Mistress recently retired from active participation on this and many other boards. You could try a search on your new head on this forum, I know it's been discussed before.

Fresh Water

What I did was uprade to a PHII tiolet which is a reat unit and cheap easy to maintain,I used the old bowl on my PHII which I got right here on this forum and taped into the head sink and now have one of those sink hose sprayers to add fresh water into the bowl when ever day sailing and don't wworry about using up my fresh water tank, but when out cruising or over nigting for few days and want to conserve fresh water I open the raw sea water value aannd use that and also have the head sink drain into the sea water to flush out the salt water.
Using fresh water most of the time does help with smelly head and less wear and tear.
Search here for more info about upgrading to PHII and sink drain flushing.

As I recall, Peggie continuously suggested that using a wand into the head bowl was not good for the pump. She also recommended tapping directly into the head sink outlet, and when the seacock is closed, the water from the sink does two things: 1) it flushes out the nasties in the line from the seacock to the head pump; 2) lubricates the head pump in both directions.

You might try just using the head sink instead of the wand.
