Leaking fresh water system

My Catalina 28 is a 1991 and for the first time I'm getting a serious leak into my quarter berth from above the battery access hatch in the wooden bulkhead at the back of my quarter berth. The boat is properly winterized each winter. When I turned on my water pump switch and opened the sink faucets to purge the anti freeze there seemed to be no problem. However when I began to flush my starboard fresh water tank with the pump on and the taps open I discovered the leaking. The pump ran continuously even after I closed the faucets. I suspect the hose from the water tank to my bathroom sink runs to the rear and above my quarter berth but I haven't yet removed the bulkhead. Anyone out there have a similar problem? Solutions and suggestions welcome. Bill Greenberg sailor4498@aol.com

yes..water leak in quarter berth

my 1991 C28 has the same problem (maybe)..I lift the port rear quarter berth cushion and there is moisture under the cushin. The wood bulkhead had some decay just below the battery door which I repaired, but once in a while I still find the moisture?? Let keep in touch on this one. I change the battery door to a top hing bottom latch and it works better. Send me your e-mail and I'll exchange some other modifications to my 1991 C28. Dave Slepoy KDSSAIL@HOTMAIL.COM

LEAK IN QUARTER BERTH

I revisited the old Catalina 28 web page and found an artical that may be of interest.. start on the Cat owners home page >>>go to MORE FUN >>> go to OTHER SAILING WEB SITES >>>> select the C28 web site and look under STEARING. This web site is closed do to lack of membership but the information is still there and good stuff.

water leak in quarter berth

Dave, Thanks for responding to my article. It seems I've always noticed some moisture under my quarter berth cushions but the leak from my water system when the pump was turned on for the first time this season was unprecedented. I've turned the job over to my yard to find and fix - my back is intolerant of crawling around in tight quarters at various angles. I'll let you know what the fix is. I was unable to find anything under "steering" at the Catalina website trail you suggested. Am I looking in the wrong place? Bill Greenberg sailor4498@aol.com

steering on Catalina web

the artical I was talking about was about leaks coming from the box under the steering assembly. Water leaks from around the pedistal into the fiberglass box in the rear berth and since it has NO water retaing lip the water runs down the face of the wood bulkhead and under the bed. I added the drain tubes like the artical refers and built a water wall of silcone to channel any water to the drain tubes. Also don't forget to find WHY water might be coming in from the pedistal assy. Dave

Water Heater

Bill I had a similar problem one spring. It turned out to be a leaking water heater which is directly above the port quarter berth. The solution unfortunately was to replace the heater. When I replaced it, I installed a shutoff valve on the cold water supply so if the tank fails again I can simply shut off the supply to the tank and still have pressurized cold water without flooding the berth. good luck.
