While recaulking the boat over the weekend, I found that the wooden bulkhead where the port chainplate was mounted was badly rotted. It looks like the bulkhead will have to be replaced which is some serious interior work. Has anyone had fixed this problem before? I checked the archives and found a couple of posts about the problem, but no mention of a fix. I'm hoping I can just cut away the rot and then bond in some new wood, between two sheets of stainless steel. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance. Peter H23 "Raven" (high and dry)

Should work!

I would think that would work as long as the added ss back-up plates span across the repaired area of the bulkhead, thru-bolting thru sound original wood. Ernie Rogers h23 Whimsy II

done mine

Actually the PO did that to mine. He had stainless steel plates made in a shop, 2 of them to sandwich the wood bracket, over the rot as previously mentioned and thru bolted with about 4 stainless bolts and nuts. Noooo problem. I can email you a pic if you send me your address.

Thanks, Mike

You may fire when ready. My e-mail address is oneprof@magicnet.net. Just one question...it sounds like the previous owner didn't remove the rot before installing the plates. Is that what happened or did I misunderstand your post? Thanks again. Peter H23 "Raven"

I replaced the entire bulkhead

on both sides in my Hunter 22. The chainplates had leaked for sometime apparently and most of the edges were rotten and I wanted all new wood in there. I am not sure what the bulkheads look like in the 23 but in the 22 the port side was easy and the starboard side was a little difficult to get back in with one piece due to the way it is secured in the fiberglass. The centerboard trunk was the difficult part but I don't think you have that to worry about from looking at the layout in boat info. Good Luck Dan
