Periodically water will come into the engine compartment. No hoses leak. We can't find the source. Also, small amounts of water will appear at the bottom of the lower storage areas. the bilge is never dry. Help. This is a 27' Hunter, 1980 in good shape except for this. Thank You, Douglas

Leak

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be a small hole in the injection bend on my Renault RC8. Tried a bunch of fixes i.e. muffler mend, JB Weld. But because of the pressure in there, the mends didn't work. Had the holes welded to fix it and it now works fine. Check the underside of the injection bend for any leaks.

Look here.

Do you still have the orginial soft metal mufler. Ahh. Bet it has a hole and you are getting a small dose every time you use the engine. Your h27 bilge should have dust in it.

water in bilge

I, too, have a Hunter 27. The bilge is never dry, but never has much water in it....except after very heavy rains. We have a small amount of water under the settees (port & starboard) after these same heavy rains. I have tried to trace it, haven't had much luck on any occassion, and feel that it might be coming in under the stanchions about midships. May pull them and reseal them after this season. Otherwise, a fine boat!!!

Water Leaks

I have a 1982 Hunter 27. Just remember that your icebox drains into the bilge. I had a lot of water in the bilge this year every time it rained. One of the hoses from the cockpit drains had come loose. Water will also leak in under the stantions.

Shaft Seal And/OR Gravity

Douglas, If a thing can leak, it will! You could be taking water through the stuffing box. These will seep some, thats just the way they are designed. Excessive leaking may indicate the need for a new seal. Any boat is subject to leaking at every bolt or seam so there could be other sources. You could try lightly dusting some talcum powder or something similar in an area you suspect a leak and the water will leave a tell tale trail. HTH Dick Vance H-25.5 "Honey Bear"
