Beneteau Water Tank Leak

Let me say that I am not recommending that you do as I did in putting the top of the tank back on. This decision was not made in a cavalier way. We consulted a couple of chemists and a chemical engineer before doing this. Yes, I know that there are toxins and carcinogenic materials in the 5200 but the MSDS sheets talk about the un-reacted stuff and the cautions are mostly about the VOC’s and other nasties in the un-reacted material. Once the stuff reacts, most of the material has been bound up in the polymerization process. Water is what causes this stuff to continue to react until it “cures” After two weeks of cure time, any stray nasties (possible condensed isocyanates) will be rinsed away with a weak ammonia solution and then that will be cleared by a water rinse. Not a casual decision made without knowledge of where we were going.. but let me reiterate that I am not recommending that you do this.
We thought of using an internal bladder, but the price of one in this size (65 gallons) is outrageous. Limited tools and a remote location dictated this fix.

As long as you're aware of the risks and are taking precautions to deal with them... just didn't want you charging ahead blindly. Good luck with the repair and let us know how it goes.

Thanks, Dog, I appreciate your comments.
Oh, Steve Dion, the decision to glass it was discarded because of researching polyester and epoxies for food contact. The problem with those for this application is the ability to get the ratios absolutely correct and perfectly mixed. They do not continue to react if the ratios are off by a little and water does not help cure them. This is why there is the wonderful sweet smell of styrene in a new boat ! This stuff if un-reacted will get into the water for along time. We figured 3M would get the formula ratios correct for product quality and maximum profit.

The current issue of This Old Boat (or Good Old Boat?) has an article of glassing in water tanks like you have.
