Just purchased a 1987 Hunter 31 that has a quarterberth leak that I can't find. Anyone else have this problem and where is it coming from? Thanks, Jonathan

Tell me more!

Jonathan: Tell me a little more. Are the cushions getting wet on top? Are they wet on the bottom? Is there any signs of water on the cloth on the sides?

Toe rail

Ever since we started tightening all the toe rail bolts as part of spring commissioning, we have had no leaks in the quarter berth.

toerail bedding

HI, I had this very problemon my boat and what I found was the 20 year old bedding compound on the toerails and stantions was very bad. I replaced the bedding on the toerail and re- did the hull to deck joint was the rail was off. now no more leaks. late mike

My worst aft berth leak was....

from the cockpit portlight which directed water on the overhead steering mechanism cover and then manifested itself on the floor of the berth way in the back. The other aft berth leak came from the port side portlights. I am not quite prepared to replace all portlights yet, so I just ran a bead of white silicone caulk around each of them. Still had the leak and finally realized that they were also leaking between the portlight's flange and the deck trim. Does that make sense? Hard to describe? Caulked there and dry as a bone after many hard rains. Still saving for new TriMatrix portlights from NewFoundMetals

Not sure

When I bought the boat, the quarterberth cushions were removed due to water damage so I'm not sure. The carpet headliner on the port quarter does show water damage about midway from the transom. Jonathan

Leaks

The leak I had to deal with is the cockpit portlight, I am in the process of replacing this spring after finally confirming this was the culprit. I did a pretty complete stem to stern rebuild on this boat as I bought it as a bare hull (not much interior, no engine, no boom, no wheel, etc.,) it took me a winter and about 700 hours but the boat is now just about complete and no other leaks except the cockpit portlight! Victory at last :) - maybe! 84 Hunter 31 Bear's Mistress
