I have a small leak . In estimating the volune of water, I think it would be about 1 tbls every 10 minutes under power. It does not leak while standing still. The leak is located in the aft berth where the cockpit drain exits the boat. Do any of you wise sailors know how I can patch this hole? The boat is a H31. Am thanking you in advance for any advice you may give. Lee

sounds funny

Why not pull thru hulls and rebead the leaking part? Why do you think the water dosent leak when raining or siting in the waves Is the EX hose near the leak ?sounds like a cooling water leak but ive never seen your boat. John

The only problem is that there are no through hull

fittings to pull. The drains are above the static waterline so none was needed or installed. Lee, all you can do is get in there and look. A trick I read about here is to use talc powder or flour to spot the source. (dry the area first and then road test) You might just pull the drain hose and re-caulk it. But like John said, can't see your boat.

Waterline Area Leaks

I'm sure you are aware that the waterline changes with the boat under power; namely the stern squats and areas that are not usually under water at rest are under water with a high stern wave. This includes those cockpit drain outlets and possibly the rudder post area. Since all three of these are rigid fiberglass tubes; a hairline crack subjected to water pressure could be your culprit. Sprinkle talcum powder lightly around the entire area. The exhaust system itself could be an issue anywhere from the water injection elbow; the exhaust hose and the connection of the exhaust hose to the fiberglas exhaust tube where it exits the boat, but a leak in those components should show up with the engine running and the boat at rest in the slip. I once had a leak that only showed up when the boat was heeled to port at 20 or more degrees. It turned out to be a broken plastic mushroom thru-hull on the end of the bilge pump outflow. Typically it was well above water at all other times.

Check the lower gudgeon

The lower gudgeon may go below the surface when under power. Mine leaked there. I made a rubber gasket for mounting the gudgeon and poked holes for the bolts with an ice pick. Solved the leak.

Randy, the H31 has no gudgeon either.

The rudder is a spade under the stern. Not much there, to leak.

I HAD the exact leak.

I had the exact leak and finaly traced it to where the cockpit scubber drains exit the hull. I repaired the leak with epoxy putty while the boat was in the water. I plan to fiberglass it at the next haul out.

Leak Found

Thank you. I just found that is the same spot mine is leaking. The leak is coming from a very small hole there. One must watch it very carefully to see it. How did you fix such a small hole(epoxy putty)? Did you force it into such a small hole? I do not think there is normally much water pressure in that area so the putty might take care of the problem permantly? Again thanks in advance for the help you have provided.. Lee

Epoxy putty fix

Unlike you, I could not pin point the exact hole that was causing the leak, so I rolled the putty into a "snake" and molded it around the edge and into the scubber drain. The great thing about epoxy putty it will adhear to wet surfaces and will harden under water. P.S. This was done in the summer when the water was warm!
