I have a leak in the rear birth of my 31 Hunter. It appears when we are motoring. I cannot determine the origin or cause of the leak. Any suggestions?

JB, You don;t say if the leak shows up low or high, but I'm going to presume low. Several possibilities that I can think of. On our 356 we had a leak that was coming in at the seam between the hull and transom scoop at the seam. When motoring, the boat squats a bit and this area is underwater. When sailing, it is above water. A little patch work and all is now dry. Another possibility is you are ggetting water from the stuffing box or the exhaust. Others may have some additional ideas. I thought my seam leak was from an overactive stuffing box for quite awhile. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Tracking leaks

Your leak sounds like it would be located low in the boat such that the location is above the water line when the boat is at rest but subject to water pressure when the boat is moving; possibly 'squatting' and pushing a stern wave when under power. The previous posts focused on some areas such as the ruddder post (could be cracked at it's base; or the stuffing box, which leaks more when the shaft is turning. Start by cleaning the bilge and all low areas of the boat. Then try sprinkling talcum powder in and around all suspected areas. Water will leave tracks in the powder. Check out the entire length of exhaust hose, but especially all clamps and the point at which the flexible hose is clamped to the fiberglass tube where it exits the boat. Good luck.
