Leak on 260

I just purchased a 1995 Hunter 260. It has been sitting in storage for over 2years. When I launched we experienced a water leaking under the sole and into the side storage areas. My estimate was about 3-5 gallons after mooring overnight, so not a huge leak. We did not notice the water till next morning. It never did reach the bilge area in the rear berth until we hauled out and parked on a hill. I have some questions: 1. Any ideas on likely cause? (ballast tank, center board connecting area...) 2. How does the wood sole (floor) connect to the fiberglass hull and how does one go about getting it out? (without destroying it, if possible) I am open to suggestions and very frustrated because we were supposed to be sailing this week (Lake Mohave) instead we are stuck on shore with a leaky boat. If anyone wants to talk to me you can call this 800# and leave a msg. and I will return your call. (800-950-3740) Thanks in advance for any help. Bill

Most likely...

it's water sitting between the top of the ballast tank and the cabin floor. There's a space between the two that can trap water. It seeps out under the sink (inside the cabinet.) That was the problem on my father's '94. Others here have had this problem too. Typically most of these boats leak around the companionway hatch. Water accumulates under the sole, etc. If yours was stored outside, there is probably water underneath. Eventually all of it will just seep out. About the only other source could be around the mast step/centerboard combination. Or a thru hull transducer that may have been installed before. If the water is not in the bilge under the aft berth, it must be in that space under the cabin floor. Go sailing, enjoy the boat and see if it doesn't eventually diminish. Carry a bucket just in case. And, if you're storing your boat outside, look for water leaking into the cabin around the companionway hatches/cover in the future. Also, searc the archives, this issue has been discussed at length here previously several times. Good luck.
