Rob

Hi. I have a leak on the starboard side of our 79 C27. Water(brown) drips on to the shelf in the quarter berth. We think the windows are ok and have ruled out the fittings on the deck area like waste clean out and vent. Any info ? Thanks Rob

Maybe this will help

Hi Rob, I have an 1984 C-27 also . I only have it a year and have fixed a few leaks so far. I had two leaks like you have one Starbord and one Port. I am not 100% sure where the brown comes from but I had it also. I think it my be the water driping off of the teak trim. I found both of my leaks to be from Stanchion base. I started on the lowest part of the boat with my wife inside I spray water at all angles on each stanchion while looked with a flashlight and also felt with her fingers . Two of the bolts are in the cabin roof top and the other two that need to be felt with litle fingers are in a grove on the cabin roof top and aganist the hull side wall Good Luck Pat

Deck rot

I've had/have similar problems. People here have told me the brown goo is from rotting plywood in the deck core. The only time I had the colored streaks was following a large coffee spill on deck (right on the leaky side). No brown before or after that. Still, the leaks were there at the stanchions and bow pulpit. A PO thought the leak was at the hull/deck joint. They caulked the bottom edge of the rubrail, so that it now holds water and may have created a leak at that point. All in all, my leaks are not severe yet. Check the chainplates too. If you are industrious and haven't done so yet, add the backing plate kits for the stanchions and chainplates and rebed everything at that time.

Chalk

Take a piece of colored chalk and draw a line "Down stream" from where you suspect the water may be coming from. the water will track through the chalk and answer your question. I would agree that it's most likely a stanchion or some other thru-deck fitting. Good luck.
