I think I have a crack in the centerboard area. Water slowly comes in. Is there any way to find out where the leak is coming from while the boat is in the water?

Bilge Water

Lynn, tracking water in a boat is like tracking a short in a wire, not always easy. First establish that its salt or fresh water ( assuming you sail on the ocean?). Mop out and rinse the bilge area best you can (to remove any traces of salt water), and let it fill as usual, then taste a few drops. Salty or not? This helps establish whether to look above or below the water line for the leak. If its fresh, most likely spots for entry are all windows, hatches, deck fittings (like stanchion bases, cleats, toe rails), cockpit drain fittings (scuppers), cooler drains. Justin has mentioned a trick of running a chalk line around the inside parimeter below the hull/deck to track water as it moves across the chalk, thus pinpointing the fitting thats leaking. If it is a fitting it will have to be rebeded. If its below the waterline, check all through hull fittings, and that CB area as you mentioned. It could well be a crack in the CB. Repair is possible, but depending on your experience with fiberglass repairs, you may want to speak to a yard that does repairs. Good luck with the leak and let us know what you find. Don
