Hello Since there has been some discussion about cars, I had a question. I have a ODay 25 and there is a single fixed lead just forward of the cockpit on each side of the boat. What are these used for? I have a 100%ish headsail. Thank you Mike

On my O'Day 27...
I was told by my mentor that those are fairleads for the spinaker. I don't have a spinaker, so I've never used them. Jim

Jib fairleads
On the Oday 23 (which is really just a slightly smaller version of the 25), they are leads for the 100% jib. If you have the original sails, the jib was cut such that the "ideal" jib lead angle to the winches would be through those stand up blocks. Of course, the ideal angle really varies with wind strength, but I found that when using my 100% jib, the fixed stand up blocks provided good sail shape over a wide range of conditions. Now that I have switched to a new 135 genny, I don't use the blocks anymore.

Is it a spring loaded block or truly a fairlead? If it is a block on the walkway, it is for the jib sheets. If it is a fairlead, it is most likely also for the jib sheets. The cars are on the track on both sides of the cockpit, behind the winches that are used only for the genoa.

Mike, I believe you are talking about the U bolt .
This is in the "79" and up models. I believe that it was bolted to the deck before the head liner was assembled to the deck. I beleive that is an optional life-line termination. r.w.landau

Two different things I think
I think we are talking about two different fittings. On my '79 Oday 23, there are two stand up blocks (one on either side) that are mounted to the side decks. These are for the jib sheets. A way further aft are two small u-bolt looking fittings, also one per side. I don't remember exactly how far back they are mounted, but your suggestion that they are alternate lifeline termination points makes sense. The stern pushpit (where my lifelines terminate) was an option. If one had ordered lifelines but no pushpit, well, you would still need a place to terminate them. I hadn't thought of that as a use for the things before. I thought they were alternate places to affix the main sheet when on a run. When the boom is way out there and the main is attached to that triangle on the backstay, the sheet itself is really in the way. I use a snapshackle on the lower main block, and its easy to remove it and put it on one of those u-bolts.
