Leading lines aft on an O'Day 22

Hello all,

I haven't posted here in quite a while. So by way of introduction, my husband and I recently purchased a 1974 O'Day 22. She's our third sailboat -the first was a Catalina 25, who taught us how to sail, then an O'Day 35 that we lived aboard for a season. We were boatless for a couple of years while we figured out if we still wanted to sail and if so, what would be the right boat. In that time we realized we missed SAILING. So we focused on finding a boat that would be simple and fun. We think we found that in this O 22. We were impressed with the build of our O35, and this 22 seems to have the same virtues.

However there are a few things we would like to do to improve safety and enjoyment. One of those is to lead the halyards to the cockpit. The companionway hatch slides right up to the mast which means the lines would have to be led almost at a 90 degree angle from a block at the mast base to a cheek block on the cabin top. If any of you have done this do you have pictures of the mod you could share?

Also any recommendations on jib furlers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Pam

I have a Coronado 25 that has the lines led aft and the deck organizer is positioned so the lines are at a 90 deg. angle. I have no problems with it that way.

Hi,

I only have the main halyard led aft. I have a harken downhaul near the base of the mast and a cheek block - this leads the line over the starboard side to a cleat on the cabin top just forward of the cockpit.
It is simple but seems to work well enough.

I have a cci furler - so no job halyards.

RBone - Thanks! That picture was worth more than 1,000 words! We weren't sure how to position the deck organizers because of the curve of the cabin top. You have them perpendicular to the way we had them on our Catalina. And that works! Thanks!

repawn - Thank you! How do you like your CDI furler? We've only had a Harken, but I gotta say I like the price tag on the the CDI much more.

Thank you for all of your help!

If I led my lines aft, then it would be more difficult for me to ease the halyard to reef the main, and once the reef grommet is on the gooseneck hook, to take up the halyard a bit if I need too. It does have a sliding gooseneck, so luff tension is controlled by a 3:1 downhaul purchase on the gooseneck.

With a downhaul line for the hank on jib, leading the jib halyard aft would not be a problem. I will probably replace the jib halyard horn cleat with a swiveling cam cleat, and considering how small the cabin on a 192 is, that's almost the same thing as lines led aft...
