Leach flapping

I have a Hunter 410 with in mast furling. I have tried all the usual trimming techniques with no help in preventing leach flapping and disappointing drive upwind. UK is now offering a larger main sail area with a roach and vertical battens. Has anyone tried this approach, and with what results?

I've been working on this also. My latest try is to take a good pull on the leach cord. I have concluded that the rig just will not allow sufficient tension in the leach by lowering the end of the boom, due to the angle of the boom to the mast and the elevation of the mainsheet blocks on the arch. I do not have battens in my sail. We may just have to live with it.

I've put a UK vertical batten main on a 410. Worked great.

Hard to believe, however, that you can't prevent the flapping by tightening the leach line while applying a bit more boom vang. Is the sail that stretched out? If so, you've possibly been furling it with too much leach tension (and/or forgetting to release the leach line prior to putting the sail away.)

Sailfast... I have a 41 and had difficulty with getting to the leach line to tighten it. Trying to get around the bimini and arch was a pain. I finally came up with putting a loop in the leach line and using my boat hook to pull it down tight when it started to flap. So far that has worked pretty well. Not certain if that is your issue but that sounded like it and that was my resolution.

That is part of the issue. Pulling the leach line with a boat hook works, but not well as it is difficult to see the sail and make a small careful adjustment. I just checked with UK to see if they have a solution. NO Thinking of extending the leach line through the out haul, then a light strap ending with a strip of velcro and and the opposite (velcro) attached to the boom. This could be to messy, but may be worth a try. What do you think? Carl Sailfast41@yahoo.com
