Lazy Jacks

A most helpful answer to my "Motor Well" question primed the pump: "LazyJacks" look as if they are practical & functional... But, after using my DIYSers, for 2 years, on my Gramp 23, they don't seem to be as good as expected... Mostly on the up-haul. Battens sometimes get stuck requiring untangling... Suggestions? Sketch? How tight, size, should the lines be? How adjustable, et-al?? All comments appreciated. Roger

Check out the Sail Cradle by Sail Care

We had the sail cradle on our B285 a few years ago. Worked as a lazy jack but stowed on the mast. It worked great. The lines were made from a bungy cord type material. A friend had it on as Tartan 37. http://www.sailcare.com/newcatalog/LGSHTML/sailcradleLG.shtml It was a good product for the price. Mark

Fold away lazy jack

Had the same problem with the battens getting caught up in mine on my last boat. Didn't make the same mistake twice. I installed a stowable system, that I can raise after the sail is up. I attached a link to some photos of the install.

Easy Jacks

The "fold away" system that was mentioned are called Easy Jacks. I didn't think to look up a link for you before I started my response, I'm sure you can find it. The main on my H33.5 is huge and I had my hands full when lowering it, especially if the wind was up. I put Easy Jacks on last season (they came with the boat, brand new in the box) and it took a little while to get used to them but they definitely help with the main. Finding the right tension for all situations takes a little trial and error. The lines can be ordered to reach back into the cockpit. My lines are long enough but I still control them from the mast, I wanted to see if I liked them before I committed to the extra hardware required to bring them aft. Tom s/v Orion's Child

Ease them

Lazy Jacks were never meant to be used while hoisting a sail, as you noted, battens can get caught. Lazy Jacks should only be set while lowering the sail. While Hoisting and sailing they should be stowed along the boom and mast.

Pigeon Lake Alberta?

Ma-Me-O Beach Saturday Night. A long time ago when I lived in Edmonton, we used to drive the back roads with a Molson's in each hand to Ma-Me-O Beach every Saturday in the summer to go to the dance. Talk about GOOD TIMES! Do they still have them?

THANKS ALL!!

Sorry to be so late responding...I was waiting for a "notification". My mistake. First, not Alberta Bro. PLYC at Bobcaygeon, Ont. Lock 32 on the Trent-Severn... With all of this info life will be much easier--Great stuff!! Seadaddler, i printed your pics--thanks! Couple of questions: Material: Bungee cord? All the same size? In the up position is it just snug? and stretched in the down position? The bottom, purple cord, does it pull as taughnt(sp?) as the others? Are the black joints rings or permanent knots? Presume each side of mast has same thing? Two 'draw' mechanisms? Just knowing they should be out-of-the-way on the up-haul... "WOW!!" Roger

Two Links

Here's 2 links, one to a site that spells out how to make them yourself and the other to the EZ Jax system I mentioned earlier. http://www.io.com/~mayfield/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi?pg=prev&topic=3&page=508 http://www.ezjax.com Tom s/v Orion's Child

Tcbro has the same site I stole my system from, I did change some things and did not use bungee cord. I used what I had laying around for the line and hardware, you can modify it what ever works best for you that's what I did but it looks just like the setup in the site from tcbro. I played around with the setup until I got it to all fold up to the mast and tied it to the mast up or down. It worked so well that I never changed it,it could be made to run back to the cockpit but I never did. My system would always be folded down and the sail cover would fit over it,I would raise them up once the sail was up or wait until ready to lower the sail. Nick

Move the tops to.............

I had the same problem with raising my sail and having the battens get caught. Solved the problem by taking the lazy jacks off off the mast and hanging them from the spreaders. Move them about 1 ft. out from the mast on each side. You wouldnt think it would make that much of a difference by such a small angle, but it does. Tony B
