I want to install lazy jacks because I am always single handing. My question is how far up the mast should I install the eyes for the long lines.
Any pics would be nice.
Not into the Harken set up, don't want pulls beating on my main sail all day . I'm making my own and will just tieing bowling loops to connect the 2 down lines to the boom.
I've been considering the same.
I looked at the way other boats are set up and two things seem apparent...
First, the front end of the upper battens need to be forward of the line at that mast height.
...this keeps the batten from catching on the line as the sail is dropped.
Second, there needs to be enough lines at the boom to effectively capture the sail along the foot.
...if they're too far apart, the sail just spills out between them.
Please enlighten me on what I'm missing without lazy jacks - I single hand almost exclusively, though my dock is in a protective cove so I typically hoist and drop the main in relatively calm air, and under motor power. Would lazy jacks on a Capri 22 be typically used as a downhaul for the main, or to facilitate reefing, or what?
Well, here in the San Francisco Bay 20 knot winds are normal in the summer sailing season, it's not fun to drop your main in that much wind and have it blowing all over the cockpit.
I look at lazy jack as a safety feature for me and anybody on board.
