Has anyone installed a lazy jack system on their 260? And, if so, what brand did you use and have you been pleased with it? Also, when reefing the main sail we have experienced the clews sliding out of the mast. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, how did you remedy it? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Don't have a clew.

Les, Can't help with the lazy jacks. I believe you meant to say that the sail slides come out of the mast track when you reef. Could you use a track stop like those sold by JSI, WM, and others? These fit into the sail track and lock down which prevents the slides from backing out of the opening on the track. Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

Lazy jacks

Les, not knowing the exact date your boat was built, there were three mast manufacturers involved until Dwyer was chosen. I know the Z spar provided a long cotter pin to stop the slides from coming out. The current or Dwyer does provide a sail slide stop so the sail slides do not come out. If you do ot have one, buy one as Makr Kissel suggests. As for lazy jacks, I have spoken on this issue allot but to be brief on the 260, they are a waste of my time as they get into the way. Granted the sail will flop over the boom (by the way, I was boomed in the head and I wonder if I lost any brain cells) but it is small and experience tells me they simply get in the way. If you are having trouble folding the sail, ask an experienced sailor how to flake a mainsail on the boom Crazy DAve

I usually don't disagree with Dave, but...

Les, I installed a set of Harken Lazy Jacks last year on my 26 which is the same basic boat. I keep the boat in a marina all season, and find the lazy jacks convenient when lowering sail. You do have to be dead into the wind when raising sail or the upper battens will snag the lazy jacks. Getting the slack set properly in the lazy jacks prevents this. They are a pain when stepping and setting the boat up. If you frequently trailer, I would pass on them, but if the boats in the water all season, I find them to be a good investment and a safety improvement as it makes it easier to furl the sail. I agree with Mike

I have shaeffer lazy jacks on my 26 and they make sailing single handed very easy and I find the same drawbacks as Mike also. I bought shaeffer because you can stow them which means you do not need to modify your sail cover I love having them. Dave Oberholtzer "Hydrotherapy"

Sail care Lazy Jacks

Look into the lazy jacks that Sail Care sells. These appear to be the easiest and best that I have seen. www.sailcare.com R. Wheeler "Rapuzha"

Beat up on Ole Crazy

Boy, I am getting flack. Better put on the flack jacket on this one. Mortar shells are coming in and I am going to duck. I agree with Mike if the boat is staying in the water but if constantly trailering, it means extra work as Mike pointed out. On the other hand, the sail is not that of for example a 320 or 340 which is bigger and bulkier. I am used to the mainsail coming down and while comeing into port, find it very easy to flake without the lazy jacks being there. Like I tell everyone, this is a good forum and eveeryone has their opinions. Mike, make sure you do not lob mortar shells but water balloons on this ole buzzle butt is fine but I will wadle out of the way. Crazzy Dave

They are easy to make there has been lots of discussion on them here check the archives. I have pictures sitting sitting on my desk of the ones I made for my boat as soon as I can unbury them I will post them in the photo forum. The Kits may be worth the money for a larger boat with a heavier boom but not on these. It makes the trip out and especially the trip back in much easier.

Sails Blowing

First year is was nothing but screaming at wife for the sail ties as the wind flake the sail over the deck. Second year had Doyle Stack Pack installed on my H240 and it was calm and no screaming. Was out sailing with a friend, who was in his H26 and we were both alone. Came time to come in and both of us drop sails at the same time. I drop the main, zip up the sail cover and was motoring into slip and he was still screwing around with the flaking and ties. Needless to say I had a open beer for him when he pulled into his slip. I have got a lazy jack on my new H260. Dan Ebert s/v The Toy p.s. Wife has promise a Stack Pak when we get some loot save. p.s.
