I would like to install a set of Lazy Jacks on my Hunter 28. What is the best way to measure and install the lines? Is a double split better than an single split on this size boat? What is the best way to modify the sail cover so it fits neatly and securly around the lines?

Take a look at the set-up sold at Sail Care. This is a bungee set-up that attaches to the mast and is deployed when bringing down the mainsheet. After you flake the main, you bring the Lazy Jack back to the mast so you do not need to alter your mainsheet or the sailcover. Works for us on our Hunter 30'. The rig is now finishing the 4th season but need to replace a couple of the bungee lines at $15.00 each. Good Luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

Lazy Jack on H26
I installed the lazy jack system where you move them to the boom when bringing down the main and store away on the mast after flaking. It worked great for the four years we had the boat. I also replaced the bungie cord after the forth year it was about $20.00. I used a uv resistent cord so was a little more. I liked not having them deployed when you raise the sail they can get in the way and will rub on the sail while sailing IMHO.

Consider the Dutchman
My H-28 came with a Dutchman Flaking System, and in my experience, it beats lazy jacks, hands down. The installation is more difficult, but the system is vastly superior to lazy jacks. In practice, two sets of grommets, placed one under the other and several feet apart, are sewn into the main. Two lengths of very heavy monofiliment are led vertically from the topping lift to the boom. The rig presents very little windage or weight aloft, and the sail flakes itself on top of the boom when lowered. The only problem is that due to UV degradation, you have to replace the monofiliment about every two years. Takes about half an hour with a helper. You should be able to find them on the web.

Work well when single handing, sail stays on the boom when dropping or reefing the main. I ran a halyard topping lift which mades removing the sail or replacing the mono lines alot easier.
