Lazy Bag vs. Lazy Jacks

wrbeglin and all, I saw this exact conversation from a couple years ago. I have a 2005 323 and the Lazy Bag is shot. I'm ready to replace and figure the easiest path is to simply have someone make the bag to the same spec except better material. Or can the bags just be purchased? Or...is it worth the change to Lazy Jacks or some other system?
Thank you!

Doyle sails made a new 'sailbag' for my 423 last year. While a bit pricier than the OEM bag, the quality was considerably better, it was slightly larger and overall was well worth it. If you go with just lazy jacks you'll still have to get a new cover but lose the simplicity of dropping the sail straight into the bag.

If you do contact them be aware they have two types, one is sewn to the main. Mine works just like the OEM bag - a couple of slides for the boom

The "factory" stack pack on my boat had a very short life. I had a local canvas shop use the original for a pattern no use Sumbrella that matched my Bimini and other canvas. Having a pattern saved considerable money and time-has worked like a charm and has weathered remarkable well.

BaconSails in Annapolis has a nice looking unit on display that they make to order. Sailrite has kit. I took off my OEM lazy bag and replaced it with a regular sail cover I made. It had rotted in 7 years.

I've had the original Neil Pryde lazy bag for nine seasons. Except for a few wear points, the material has held up well. The big problem is that the stitching is rotting out. I have had the main zipper re attached about three times. I had a quote from Pryde awhile ago for about $750 to replace. Which seemed to be a little steep.

Since I have the original yet as well as the dimensioned drawing, I think I'll try a local canvas shop.

That seems pricey given that the Doyle bag for my 423 was 1700. BTW that included all new lazy jack lines with four attachment points vs three, a more substantial batten and a larger configuration overall. Plus installation

If you're a DIY'er, Sailrite.com has a lazy bag kit that works very well. If not, any good canvas shop can pattern a new bag off of the old one of there's anything left of it. I designed and built my own before I saw the Sailrite version and I love it. I wouldn't go back to using a separate sail cover unless I was racing and didn't want the bag on the boom all the time.
