laying up MD6A

Hello everyone,

I have a number of questions concerning the MD6A. They may
seem simple, but definitive answers from persons with
experience is better than than my own speculation... So here they
are.
1. What is a good Diesel lubricating oil? ( The instruction booklet
suggests service DS and Sae 30. I don't think DS service exists
any longer. The booklet was published in 1972.
2. The name of a product for lubricating the reverse gear?
3.Lubricating the reversing mechanism in the combi reducion
gear... Is Shell Alvania EP2 still available or what are its
alternatives?
4. Inhibiting oils.....Esso Rustban 623/ Shell Ensis oil 20.... are
they still produced ? What are other brands of the same
product....Mobil, Petro Canada?
5. Rustproofing Agent.... Esso Cutwell 40 and Shell Donax C are
they still around or have they been replaced by other products?
6. Should the injectors be removed and the cylinders sprayed
with inhibiting oil as the booklet suggests? This sounds difficult
to someone who has never seen a diesel engine before. Has
anyone had experience with this proceedure?
You replies may save me from rushing off in the wrong direction
and may assist me in appreciating the soul of the MD6A. I thank
you in advance and send my best regards...

Antonio,
I have a MD7A in my Ballad (Albin's 30' model). For storing the engine in
the winter I use fogging spray. The very last step I do before pulling the
batteries is to run the engine and spray fogging oil in the air intake. As
the engine takes it in it will rev up and clatter a bit, so make sure it is
at an idle speed before you do this. After it has run at this higher rpm
for 30 seconds or so I just shut it down. I have done this for 6 years now
and it has never failed to start in the spring, and has never given me a bit
of trouble. For oils, I use the best quality automotive oils and
lubricants. If you consider how little time you will use the engine, 30
hours a season or so... and the fact that you change it every year, I don't
see any issues.
