Looking for some suggestions on best Wi-Fi gateway currently. I’ve searched and see mostly older posts.
What I see online is mostly Yacht Devices or Digital Yachts devices.
I have a small NMEA network installed and want to send to an ipad
What device works best?
Thanks

NMEA 2000 or 0183?

For 2000 a Wi-Fi gateway like from yacht devices is still probably the best option. If you have or are buying a chartplotter you probably also have the option of having it do a NMEA2000 to 0183 conversion and emit the 0183 sentences via Wi-Fi.

Network talks N2K. I only have a Raymarine i70s handling my speed, wind and depth. But the display is too small. I wasn’t to use an iPad at helm

I've had a comar for several years to send AIS data to an ipad, or my phone. Easy setup, works fine.

Signal K is a new open source standard for network integration. There is a device called iKommunicate that will convert to ethernet.

I have the Yacht Devices YDNR which does N2K, 0183, Seatalk, and wifi. It works fine with OpenCPN.

Yacht Devices YDWG 02 NMEA 2000 WiFi Gateway is a pretty nice, and easy to use device that plugs seamlessly into your NMEA 2000 backbone. Then when you connect a device to it via WiFi and configure any applications that can stream the data to pick it up, it works pretty well. There are some known issues with some of the data, but overall its pretty good. You will need some networking knowledge to get it to work though.

I have a Vesper 8000 AIS that is connected to my backbone then connects wirelessly to my Furuno radar which is the boats network. It puts all of the data on my IPad using Time Zero IBoat. Works great except I think my GPS antenna went south on me.

I go cruising to get away from jargon and technical complexity.
Until the industry learns that cruisers are not techno-geeks and
builds a unified system that's plug and play, without the the gizmo add-ons,
I'll stick to analog gauges!

Thank you all for the advice. It looks like the Comar is 50% higher price than the YDWG, for what appears to be the same functionality.
Since it is not a big investment, and plugs directly into my Seatalkng hardware, the YDWG . I’ll try it first with an old spare iPad and the NMEARemote Lite software.
I have concern about Wi-Fi strength coming from the compartment where my network is, but I guess I’ll find out

May I ask, what MFD have you? My Raymarine e7 MFD had a built-in WiFi access point.

I found Yacht Devices gadgets quite nice and their tech support answered my questions right away. That was before Russia invaded Ukraine, so tech support from the manufacturer might not be available.

I don’t have a mfd. I installed the Raymarine i70 display, with old speed and depth plus new wind transducer. Works great, but too small for good viewing from helm. Plus I want to have some other views available while I am driving

Gotcha, thanks for the reply.

I bought this boat fully equipped, and found there are three WiFi networks on it! I still haven't figured it all out yet. I have the Vesper 8000 AIS with its own WiFi, a B&G MFD with WiFi, and a Simrad GoFree WiFi access point. It's a mess!

If you can live with just NEMA0183 to WiFi the Digital Yacht Wln10 can be had cheap.

Not to hijack, but I’d probably just disconnect the GoFree from your setup. The only feature of the GoFree that the B&G doesn’t have is the ability to route to other IP’s on the LAN when you’re connected to it. That’s usually not a big requirement. In my experience the GoFree was not that reliable, so when we upgraded to a B&G MFD with WI-FI I stopped using it.

Interesting. Thanks. Its not interfering with anything at this point, so I can just leave it. I honestly can't recall exactly where it is, anyway! :)

Sounds good for you but it’s not what he is asking. Like all technology, they all become obsolete once installed.

You can make the Vesper use and forward the he network info to another network. I his is what I’m doing with my Furuno as the primary. You have to hook it up to a computer via usb
