so sad. the commercial vessels seem to be out a lot more in worse weather than the recreational sailors . at least we can choose to stay in port when the hurricanes are coming...

So sad. I am in complete amazement that this shipping company allowed the El Faro to sail. The storm was squatting right on it's course. Stunning.

Poor judgement on the part of the Captain to sail into a storm which had been predicted to turn into a Hurricane. No one could have predicted it was going to rapidly intensify into a Cat 4 storm but even a Cat 1 is nothing to tangle with. I know employment and money are at issue but a Captain needs to make decisions solely on the lives under his charge and the weather conditions. There should be legislation against undue pressure by employers.

So sorry for the families of the crew. If I heard the reports accurately the CG was out there in conditions that were at least dangerous and maybe perilous. Kudos to them for protecting and serving. But what's up with creating a situation in which they have to risk their lives. It's not like the days of yore. There are good weather reports. Ships don't need to be caught in storms. I understand that commerce has to go on but there's got to be a sensible way to not send shipping into weather that poses an undue risk to the crew and the cargo. My nephew was Merchant Marine. I would be on the war path if his company sent him into something like that.
