I left Montauk,NY Oct 19 heading to Florida all off shore and yes we did dress for cooler weather and once into the carolina's we were warmer and did not need long johns but always did wear foul weather clothing until Florida in my H-36.

In your Hunter 25? In November? From Maine? We went offshore from Beaufort, NC, in mid-March. We froze until, literally, St. Augustine. Then we were only just cool until Miami.

Was driving down here to the hospital and thinking about the same thing Nick. A 25-footer in the Atlantic in December is going to be a cold, wet ride. Cockpit protection is a must. A really good autohelm is also essential. We spent a lot of time hunkered under the dodger letting the boat go where the Simrad was set. We also had about a 4 x 6 piece of sunbrella that we put in front our legs to try to break the wind and waves. Which reminds me how important good waterproof boots are, large with lots of socks!

If you stay offshore you make better time and will get south a lot faster. If you go inside you will be cold a lot longer but not as wet. You have to go outside around NJ. If you do daylight only that's about four days in the Atlantic. About 30 hours from Sandy Hook to Cape May if you can stay out.

Hunter 25 off shore?

I owned a 1978 Hunter 25, shoal draft for many years in the Chesapeake.
Assuming your 1974 version is the blister deck 4' draft, you can expect a difficult time once the winds are in the 20's and above, even with a 110 jib and reefed main. In the typical original design, the cockpit locker and hatch boards are not secure and water tight, and there was no stern rail. Aux. propulsion was typically a 9.9 outboard and the prop does not stay in the water when you get into serious wave action. Have you checked your Insurance coverage?

Maybe you aren't reading the entire posts. No, other than the cold and wet you are NOT OK.

Actually I have lived my whole life near the shores of cold Lake Erie. I am retired and for two years was able to spend a few months in Florida. My boat will be back on her original cradle in Huron, OH before you leave on your adventure. The answers that you are receiving are from experienced sailors including my reply to your e-mail. As I wrote you, we may be off base a little if it turns out that you and your boat are ocean ready. Many on here find it hard to believe that a Hunter 25 can be ready for the Atlantic in winter.
