Late model Hunter 25 question about cracking...

Hi all, my first post here.
I am looking at buying my first sailboat, a 25 if new, a 27 if used. I am open to Hunter and Catalina but of course I like the lower price of the Hunters. Being in a shallow water area, the boat that really stands out to me is the Hunter 25 with its shoal keel.

There is one locally for sale at a dealer. This is a NEW 2006 that has been sitting on a trailer at the dealership for a couple years, long enough for the gelcoat to oxidize.

My question is specific to this boat (25 foot) and possibly even model year : ...from a lot of people boarding this boat, there is a lot of cracking at the transom where you would land your right foot upon climbing up the ladder, just to the left of the rudder. The fiberglass flexes there very noticeably and I can even flex it with my hand pushing down on this spot. This WILL lead to a complete break in that spot. This is not a superficial gelcoat stress crack, the flexing of the glass is too great.

Has anyone else had this problem or is this a known weak spot identified by the manufacturer and corrected on later model years?

Any input at all about this? This is the only Hunter 25 anywhere even close to driving distance for me, so I have nothing else to compare this boat to.

Have you asked the dealer about it? Perhaps that can reinforce it - epoxy a piece of marine py behind it and coat in glass? If the sale is hinging on it, and it's an obvious fault, they'll probably go along with you.

Hello Fish...

You found us! I bet Hunter would warranty the part in question. Surely, you're not afraid of a little oxidation. I've got a random orbital polisher to attack one side while you use one of your industrial wheels on the other. First one to burn the gelcoat buys the beer! Take advantage ask for a water trial, or try the mast lowering system to see if the routine meets with you expectations. My trailer includes an extendable tonge, a must have for the extra draft the 25 has on my 240. I'll go with you if you feel the need for guidance. The more I sail my boat the better I like it, especially since taking two firsts and a second in our local series. Good luck!
