Just got the results of an overnighter that we did last Friday. We lost to a Frers 45 (rating 39)and an X-412 (60). But, we stomped the rest of the fleet. 'Falcon' a Swan 56 (-23), a Frers 45 (39), J-39 (51), X-382 (78), Tripp36 (72). What a great feeling to be able to run with the big boys and beat many of them. We finished 1st in class and 3rd in the whole fleet. Boat preperation and a good crew are so important if you are going to have a chance at a win.

Good Show

So, Skipper, tell me now, exactly what type of boat did ya sail to win all these races?

My Boat

I have a Legend 35.5 that has a custom keel. But the reason that we do so well is a combination of all, boat prep, great crew work, and that keel.

Good Goin Alan!

The 35.5 is a good sailing boat but, even so, to do this good the skipper, and like you said, the crew and boat preparation, is key. What are some of the details on preparation? What about your tactics? What's your PHRF with the new keel? With a win like that who needs Viagra (gota do something about all that spam)? Congratulations!!!

Work in progress

John, The boat prep is an ongoing work in progress. I am always upgrading and making changes to make the crew work more efficient. When things flow well, sail changes go quicker and more easily. Everyone on board knows his job and they work in unison. It’s like a ballet. This season, for example, I replaced the jibsheet turning blocks with Harken lockable carbo blocks. This allows the jibsheet to be locked in position and the winch released to the spinnaker sheet/guy without the need for a separate set of spinnaker winches. The pole downhaul was moved to the base of the mast so now when the pole is trimmed or eased the downhaul doesn’t need to be adjusted. These are just a few of the refinements that we have made. I would love to find someone who has made changes on his 35.5 and swap ideas. Our current PHRF rating is 141. Last year the PHRF committee bumped us 3 seconds because we were winning too many races. I have a nasty feeling that we will get another review this season.

PHRF rating

Thanks for the information on your rating. My Legend 37 is rated locally at 117. Can't believe there is 34 seconds per mile difference between our boats. Will use your data to see if our rating committe will consider changing my rating.

Re: PHRF rating

Del, Just as a point of reference, a Legend 37 wing keel has a rating of 120 with YRA-LIS. I've sailed the 37 and it is a very fast boat. It has more speed potential than people realize. The thing that you need to remember is that the PHRF committee assumes that your boat is "race ready". This means, a clean smooth bottom, minimum weight, feathering/folding prop, racing quality sails, and a good crew with top helm skills. If you are racing your boat with stock equipment, you are giving away time to your competition.
