Sailing days seldom come nicer than on the last sail back to the beginning of the heart of Maine's cruising grounds and the town where I used to be Harbormaster. The wind varied between just enough to keep the boat moving nicely and thinking about a reef. We close reached up the coast under a sky perfectly clear overhead with lovely little puffs of cumulous clouds ahead where the last storms of the night were dissipating.

We got to within a couple miles of Richmond Island which I’ve described as the first place where cruisers from the south get an idea of what lies ahead. I like to run the engine long enough to fully get up to temperature and we’d had a good enough sail that beating up into Seal Cove wasn’t very appealing so we finished under power.

Mike rowed ashore for a hike on the island and I sat in the cockpit thinking about the whole trip and realizing that, now that I’ve seen it all, Maine is unquestionably the best and most beautiful cruising on the east coast of the U.S.

Mike returned and went for a swim:

Mike decided he was ready to return to shore since he was out of paper and has seen everything between Richmond Island and Portland many times. We ran over to the other side of the cove and anchored temporarily while I dropped him off on the beach about five minutes from his house. I returned to sit in the cockpit and think more about the trip and what lies ahead.
