The first issue looks like how comfortable you'll be getting around the wheel to get back to the helm. I agree that the wheel looks like it could be bigger.

Secondly the center point will make it higher amidships. That way you'll be encouraged to move over to the port or starboard.

I'd suggest getting a cardboard piece and cut-out a "mock-up" model. See how it feels not only for you, but others who might be using it.

I have an old helm off a 380 I might trade you for. What is the shaft size on yours? I'll have to measure mine and post back at ya

Good idea on the mock-up.
I solo most of the time and find I sit against the lifelines and steer from their.

The problem is getting around a larger wheel and the suggestion of a cardboard mock-up is a very good suggestion. For that reason I ordered the wheel supplied by Hunter which you have and never an issue with my customers

Or get a folding one. That's what we did for the little Catalina and the larger wheel is a dream. The ability to fold it up to get around it is a pleasure.

Why don't you get a tiller extension and mount it on the wheel's mid point? Then you can sit on the rail and steer... I've seen a couple of examples where folks did that and it worked out well.

How times change, I remember when installing smaller wheels was considered smart. They are a useful tool for racing making rudder adjustments less sensitive and more precise but for day sailing and coastal cruising they are just an obstacle in the cockpit.

I have the OEM wheel off my First 310 that I would be willing to sell if interested. It is a 32 inch and has a new leather cover on it. It is slightly "dished". It fits a one inch tapered shaft. PM me if interested and I can send a picture.

I took a couple more pictures of our wheel for you today....Lewmar 32" folding. I looked at the 36", it felt to big in the cockpit even when folded up. We love this wheel, it has a great feel and looks great.

Ok I am going to try a 28 off a H280.
Slightly bigger and see how that works .
Maybe ok . Maybe I’ll need to move up .
