large volume bilge pump

I am in the process of installing a large volume manual bilge pump. My boat is an 81 H33 and there seems to be no way to run an 1 1/2" diameter hose (or any other hose for that mater) from the lowest part of the bilge up to the cock pit area. My next lowest part of the boat that I can get a hose to is the bottom of the engine compartment. By the time water reaches this area I will have water over the floor boards of the boat. Has anybody else done this? How have others with the 33 installed a large volume bilge pump? My electric pump is rated at 800 gpm and though I will install another electric pump I still want a manual that can be operated from the cockpit area.

Gusher 10 manual bilge in H33

I suppose you meant 800 gph? My 79 H33 has a Gusher 10 manual bilge (22.5gpm) with 1 1/2" hoses installed with pump in cockpit pickup in the bilge and discharge out through the transom. However the installer did have to exit the bilge area through the sole right at the foot of the companionway ladder. In the next day or two I'll take some pictures and post them.

H 33 manual bilge pump installation

I have posted some comments and photos in the photo forum for the installation in my boat. As the notes indicate, I think that there are several areas that should be changed to make a cleaner job. However as it is, it will do the job well and I check it fairly often to make sure that it would work if required.

great photo essay

Thanks for the great photo's and narrative, very informative. I'm not sure if I can get the hose into the engine compartment since my boat has four gell-cell batteries just foward of the engine (where the hose enters the engine compartment). I think this area was originally the shower sump basin. Also, I'm plan to mount the pump on the starboard part of the far-aft locker. My plan is to be able to operate the pump while at the helm (a sail solo frequently). I'm wondering if I should have the hose exit the boat on the stern or on the starboard/stern and how high up the hull?
