I need to inspect the chain plates on my Lancer 25 but it has a head liner. Does anybody know if there is a trick here or do I just pull real hard and wait for some inner panel to fail? It seems like the panel were glassed in but I cant tell.

Most times they ( HL'ers ) are glued in with some kind of resin.. Use a dremel and cut out just that small area.. Dont take the whole HL'er out.. You will never get it back in properly.

I am not familar with the Lancer 25, but I have never seen a chainplate under a headliner. Usually they pass thru the deck and are attached either to a bulkhead or the sides of the hull. Hate to see you start cutting unless you are certian you will find what you are after.

The lancers do not have a "chain plate" in the classic sense. It is a flat plate to which is welded a vertical plate with the hole in it for the turnbuckle clevis pin. The "plate" pulls up against the side deck. There is no other support.

I know I pulled mine out on my 1976 Lancer 28 and re bedded them, but for the life of me I can't remember how I got that bit of vinyl liner down fronm the inside of the side decks. Check for hidden screws. Or just pull down and see if there is a point where you can see something holding it back which you can then release. I know I got mine back in place after the job so it couldn't have been all that tough. The plates themselves pulled up against a rough, badly laminated surface. The fit was awful. Always surprised me that they worked at all.

My lower shrouds were set as Sam discribes and a flexible vinyl head liner was stapled over to a wood backing board. There were a couple of small screws that held the plate in place until the shroud was attached. I went to outboard chain plates and glassed over the deck holes.
