I have observed at least three different configurations of the Lancer 25 in local boat yards: A 1975 model with an approximate 2' shoal draft, minimal ballast, masthead rig, and long windows; a 1979 model (Mark IV) with masthead rig, 3' draft, 1300# ballast, and 3 Beckson style ports, and finally, a Mark V version similar to the Mark IV but with a fractional rig that places the mast farther forward and adds 30 square foot of sail area. First: What are the sailing characteristics of the Mark IV vs. the Mark V? Was the masthead rig so underpowered that they changed to a fractional rig with more sail area to help it perform better? Also, did the increased sail area cause the boat to become more tender? Second: With the masthead rig, the mast was supported by a metal post that bears abainst the keel on the cabin sole (within the well). On the fractional rig the mast is supported by a beam over the bulkhead opening to the head. On a number of similar models of the Lancer 28 (where the mast is supported by this "beam" design) I have noticed consistant (significant) gel coat crazing and cracking on the deck around the base of the mast. Does the Lancer 25 fractional rig have the same issues relative to mast support? Third: Are there any other significant characteristics between the two boats that would make one or the other a better choice? Thanks for your help. Steve Shenkel
