Through bolting
To my knowledge, there are no aluminum plates embedded in our '77 h27, and with the traveler at the aft end of the cockpit there was no hardware mounted on the cabin roof.I mounted hardware and a winch to lead two lines back to the cockpit by through bolting all the hardware using the "drill/fill/drill" process to seal the balsa core from the new holes. Then I mounted a grab handle on a piece of cherry to cover the washers, nuts and bolts on the ceiling of the cabin.Through bolting is easy, and effective for deck hardware, and I recommend it if the previous attachments fail, even if there is an aluminum plate. Second best would be moving up to larger bolts, and redrilling and retapping the plate to be sure you have the threads to hold them.Gary, the bolt at the mast tabernacle was probably a prior owner addition. In any case, you need to check for wood rot in the hole. And, I doubt that there is a nut down there, so you are going to have to start over somehow. At the mast, I would recommend installing a plate under the insert/step that holds the mast. That means taking the mast down, pulling up the insert/step piece, and inserting a u shaped plate under it. Then, you would have a known, clean hard point for current or future turning blocks.I found a couple of cheek blocks (stainless plates holding blocks, mounted on teak with a curved side to fit the mast) in my rigger's trade-in box, and mounted them on the lower mast to turn the lines to the organizer on deck. That's another idea for you.DavidLady Lillie
