Last summer we cruised the SE corner of the lake hitting every port from Olcott to Cape Vincent. Definitely one of my top 5 cruises ever.

Try SW corner; Youngstown, Niagara, Dal Housie, Hamilton, Bronte,
Port Credit, Toronto, and Buffers park.

Fantastic route, lots to see, close to town.

Those are my short hops (3-4 day) I take every year. I avoid Youngstown because they pull that pay first night crap. Often go up river to Pirates Cove. You leave out Wilson and Olcott, small towns and both great stops.

Has anyone here done NYC to Chicago via the Erie (Barge) Canal? Even though I grew up in Fairport, I was wondering what other towns are good stops along the way.
(I know this isn't exactly Ontario, unless one takes the branch through Fulton and Oswego)

We spent a bunch of days in the SacketsHharbour / Henderson Harbour area last summer and will definitively go back this year. While in that neck of the woods, consider a trip to Waupoos on the Canadian side. (you can check in there)

Very friendly people and a great pub up the street. Best of all there are plenty of anchorages offering protection from all wind directions. There is a very friendly marina close by and they will let you use their showers, laundry or drop your garbage for a nominal fee, even if you're anchored. There is also a winery, cidery and cheese factory within easy (slow) dinghy ride.

Cheers

Matt

Continue your cruise to the NE. +1 for Waupoos. Also lots to explore on Wolfe Island, especially if you have a bike. If you anchor near Marysville, on Wolfe Island, there's a free ferry that will take you over to Kingston. Main Duck Island is also a fun stop.

RocketDogs, yes I've done NYC to Oswego and Oswego to Chicago through the Welland That's a very long trip: I wouldn't do it out & back in the same season again... Had to miss too many nice spots because of a tight schedule (2½ months).

From Cape Vincent you can meander downriver (NE) to Alexandria Bay, see the wooden boat museum and tons of nice restaurants, antique shops etc., then (NE) to Hart island and it's castle, keep going down river to Brockville ON. after staying either at the municipal marina or the BYC turn around and using the small vessel channel go to Rockport and mosey on to the Canadian Thousand Islands, to Gananoque and then to Kingston a one time capital of Canada and a fine historic town; the 1976 Olympic sailing events were held there. Then on to Waupoos and with a fine wind sail across lake Ontario back home.

I came to Lake O 7 years with the goal to visit every harbor on the Lake I could get into. The original post was a cruise to pick up some of the harbors I had missed. At this point I have only have Darlington, Newcastle, and Presqu'isle, which I hear is full of mosquitoes. Been up to Alexandria Bay in the Thousand I.

Hope you have a pretty shallow keel, Higgs if you hope to get into those harbours.
