Has any body here sailed on the lake of the Ozaks, if so what kind a wind conditions did you experience. Is there enough wind to get around the place and have fun? What time of year is best for sailors? thank you in advance for your reply.Don Chesley

Never Sailed the Lake of the Ozarks
I have been on a power boat on the Lake of the Ozarks. It is a large lake with a lot of arms in hilly and some might even consider mountainous terrain. I sail on a similar lake, although not as large. You can have a lot of fun and you can get around. However, sailing on a lake in hill country requires some patience. Once the you get the sails set, the wind will shift. You learn to constantly turn with the wind and to reset the sails. The only problem with getting somewhere, is that it is more difficult to sail upwind because of the varying winds. It is particularly difficult and maybe impossible to sail a narrows against the wind.

Take heed
LOZ is a overly popular destination and home for powerboats. Conditions on this lake are extreme on weekends and barely tolerable during the week in season. Large cruisers, jet skis and cigarette style boats dominate. Speed and size can create waves that rival offshore conditions on bad days. That being said, off season conditions can be great. If your flexible the weekdays afford better opportunities to enjoy some peace and quiet. Would agree, the lake's geography could create unpredictable wind.

Lake Stockton is a short distance south and seems to be predominatly a sail boat lake. We have been there several times and have considered moving ther if it were not for the extreme summers. Talking with the sail boaters, they say the wind is terrific and consistant. Jim

I was born down the road and had been going the Lake of Ozarks since the early 1950's. It has gone from a pristine lake to a ZOO. I stopped going several years ago. Stockton is the number 1 sailboat lake in Missouri. Mark Twain Lake is another good sailing lake. Alton Lake on the Mississippi is home to a lot sailboats. Development around the Lake of the Ozarks has ruined it IMO. A powerboat ZOO. You will find very few sailboats there. Rana

Hi Don, we sail out of Mark Twain Lake. We have a small but friendly group of sailors. There are about 50 memebers in the Mark Twain Lake Sailing Association. http://www.mtlsa.missouri.edu/ I haven't sailed at LOZ but echo all the negative notes about the lake. If I were to sail the lake it would be week days before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.
