Anyone ever sailed on Lake Oahe in South Dakota? I would be interested in talking about your experience if you have sailed that lake.

I just read a magazine article on Lake Oahe recently and can not remember which magazine. I think either Boat US magazine or Trailer life. I'll try to remember to check tonight.

Isn't South Dakota a little bit north of Texas?

I have not sailed there, but I used to fish on Oahe as a kid. I have wished that I still lived by there to be able to take weekend or longer trips on the lake now that I do sail. So I think it would be great, but I could be way off base. I would just think that the size of the lake would make it easy to get away from other boaters. There just might not be any marinas or anything to keep a decent sized boat at.

Been there and it is big. I used to windsurf on it. It is not terribly deep and there are lots of dead trees. I don't think that I have ever seen a sailboat on it. Now Lake Sakakawea in ND is a prime sailing lake. Pristine, undeveloped, deep and windy!

I live in the Black Hills in South Dakota. Though I'm not sure exactly where Texas or California are, I can tell you the sailors in this area don't sail on Oahe. They go to the Missouri River at Chamberlain or Yankton, SD. Our local group sails on Angostura Lake. By sailing standards, it's a small lake, only 5000 acres. You do a lot of maneuvering. I started sailing 3 years ago and thought Oahe would be a good place to go. The local club folks steered me to the river instead, but no one said why.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Whiskers, interesting, I was at Angostura this summer and looked at the sailboats in the Marina. Yes the lake is small but nice. Have you ever been up to Sakakawea? I think that you will be impressed. Come on up next summer and we will show you around.

Mike,

Those places are on the ocean side(s) of the country, kinda like Maine, too. The water is salty, so our fiberglass boats rot, rot, rot more quickly. We have tides instead of excess rainfall to change the height of our docks. We're also sure that the folks who live there have no clue either.:D
